Harbor Loft Apartments, Lynn (MA), United States

A multi-storey residential building at 7 Liberty Square (Harbor Loft Apartments) in Lynn, Massachusetts, has been upgraded with Advanced’s Axis AX fire alarm and voice evacuation system, enhancing fire safety performance while minimising disruption to residents.

The project was delivered by Hayden Systems, working in partnership with Harding, and involved the replacement of an ageing fire alarm system with a modern, high-performance solution designed to meet current national and local code requirements. By leveraging the flexibility of the Axis AX platform, the team was able to utilise much of the building’s existing infrastructure, including wiring and field devices, significantly reducing installation time and overall project costs.

Christopher Whitmarsh, S.E.T. at Hayden Systems, commented: “Upgrading a live, multi-storey residential building requires a system that is both flexible and straightforward to install. Axis AX allowed us to make full use of the existing infrastructure while delivering a modern, code-compliant solution, helping us complete the project efficiently with minimal disruption to residents.”

The new system comprises a centralised network of addressable fire panels and voice amplifiers, distributing 25-volt speaker circuits and 24-volt notification appliance circuits throughout the building. Remote data gathering panels (DGPs) were installed at key locations to support power distribution and system performance, all of which were assembled and fully tested prior to delivery to site, ensuring a smooth and efficient commissioning process.

Axis AX’s advanced networking capabilities and robust digital communication protocol enabled the reuse of existing cabling as part of the signalling line circuits, maintaining reliable transmission while streamlining the upgrade. The system’s modular architecture and intuitive configuration tools also allowed the installation team to adapt the solution to the specific requirements of the building, delivering comprehensive protection across all occupied areas.

Sarah Lawson, Operations Director at Advanced added: “Projects like Harbor Loft Apartments highlight the flexibility of Axis AX in complex retrofit environments. Its scalable architecture and advanced networking capabilities enable modern fire protection to be delivered efficiently, even in occupied high-rise buildings, while supporting long-term reliability.”

Mike Madden, VP of US Sales at Harding, commented: “This project at 7 Liberty Square demonstrates the flexibility and performance of Axis AX in retrofit applications. Being able to upgrade a high-rise building while making use of existing infrastructure is a major benefit for building owners, reducing disruption while still delivering a modern, code-compliant system.”

With the new Axis AX system in place, 7 Liberty Square now benefits from a scalable, high-performance fire detection and voice evacuation solution, ensuring continued safety for residents while providing a future-proof platform capable of adapting to evolving building requirements.
