CPD: Smoke Control Systems: Principles, Pitfalls & Protection

Smoke control systems play a critical role in protecting life, property and firefighting operations during a fire.

This CPD seminar explores how smoke control systems are intended to work in practice, and why their correct design, installation and ongoing management are essential to achieving the fire strategy and complying with UK legislation.

Focusing on real‑world application rather than theory alone, the session examines the fundamental principles of smoke movement, the main system types and methods used in buildings, and the common pitfalls that can undermine system performance if not properly addressed.

The CPD is delivered online by Shaun Scott, Applications Engineer.  The module lasts one hour and is free of charge.

The CPD module covers:

  • Why smoke control is required and how smoke moves within buildings
  • Main types of smoke control systems and their application by building and fire strategy
  • Key system components and cause‑and‑effect operation, including critical system interfaces
  • Primary smoke control methods, including pressurisation, smoke exhaust and compartmentation
  • Common design, installation, commissioning and maintenance pitfalls affecting system performance
  • Key UK legislation and standards governing smoke control system design and compliance
  • Testing, maintenance, competence and certification requirements to ensure ongoing system effectiveness.

On successful completion of the CPD you will receive a certificate from The CPD Certification Service.

This CPD seminar is suitable for fire engineers, consultants, system designers, contractors, installers, facilities and building managers, duty holders and responsible persons, as well as anyone else who needs a clearer understanding of how smoke control systems should be designed, applied and managed to meet UK fire safety legislation and standards.
